In early period of WW2 there was a pact between Hitler and Stalin.
Almost incredible: a state that has as signboard the overcoming of the sway of gentry and its oppression was the aggressor of a sovereign country. About 22.000 were killed in the Katyn massacre by Soviet intelligent service "NKVD". The calendar tells to remain in those events and think about nationalism and its results.
The Soviet Union occupied the east Polish area and the German Empire the west. After the war the territory remained in the USSR (Did Poland lost this war again USSR to justify such requirements?), Polish people was forced to emigrate westwards, settled in formerly German territory and German people was displaced from there. Luckily today the borders (btw. Ger and Pl) aren't anymore and the generation who lives today has peaceful neighbours and loves to visit the other country.
Poor poland it seems all through history some bigger power has been kicking there ass. Im sure I saw a film in which way back to pointy sticks and arrow wars poland was getting stuffed by the Turks or Tartars or some scruffy hord on horse back!
Ingolf,good comments.
And today in the morning the Polish president died in a plane crash on his way to the commemoration near this place. What a tragedy!Deepest sympathy, Poland.
If you belived in such things you may start to belive this place is cursed for the polish! But of course that tosh? Isn’t it!
Dear Steve, I don’t believe in such things.Indeed a Polish newspaper yesterday wrote „Katyn became a accursed place for Poland“, but this is the result of the unhappy events, not their reason.I’m the opposite of an occultist.A desaster caused by barbarous people has nothing to do with an accident that may happen to everybody. Sorry if my text seemed so.
No your text didnt lead me to belive that some places are cursed for want of a word. But I have noticed that in some locations round the world bad things happen over and over again
I was watching the movie… On Sunday I guess. The one which is now showed in many countries. And I was wondering how people can be so cruel. Kill someone… Just like that. Over 20 000 people. That’s sick…And isn’t it ironic? People keep repeating that the passengers of the plane were going to visit Katyń as the place of so many graves and it became a grave to them as well. They say that it’s second Katyń. But I think it’s a bit to strongly said. Anyway… The world is speaking about Katyń again… People should know such things I guess.
Russia/Soviet Union has exterminated many more peoples. In my case, Romania, the „best killers“ were, in fact, communist Jewish. East Romania was occupied as well, but the population was not sent west, but deported in camps – the well known Gulag – in Siberia. This ww2 was a completely dirty business.
You wrote this post 6th April and now we have Katyń the second 🙁
Aaaah, I understand.Yes, some hurts are too deep. And it seems diplomacy doesn’t enough for mutual respect, children already learn to cultivate old prejudices (everywhere) and ignorance negates actualities.Sadly.On the other hand: history was cruelly and unfair, I already wrote it in the blog-post. And there were reasons before, for instance after WW I Poland was „created“ (like Israel later) after some hundred years of inexistence as souvereign state. This for some powers in Europe was a thorn in it’s flesh and so on.
Dear Sybilla, what do you mean?Kaczynski? Komorowski? All what happened this year? The fuss about the forming of a government?
Sometimes we called 10th April in this way. Huge tragedy for us. And in my opinion „peace and love“ with Russia is not true.
Ingolf, it is complicated :). After all Germany, as a modern state, was created in 1871, a time when modern Italy and Romania showed up, too, by unification. In 1989 Germany reunified, which was not possible, at that time, for Romania (with its province Moldova). Now it is possible the romanian reunification, but Germany (and other powers) are strongly against it 🙁 So…it’s complicated, and unfair.
Poland is placed between two powers, and it’s so complicated. And before WW I Poland had been under annexation for 123 years, then we had 20 years of freedom.
I will put a question here: why is Poland supporting Kosovo albanians ? Now, the International Tribunal of The Hague has confirmed the right for self-determination of such small regions. But Kosovo itself has small regions inhabitted exclusively by serbians. These micro-regions will demand their independence. So—> how far should we go with this separatism ? notice one thing: in 1950 Turkey had a population of 20 million, not it has over 80 million. Turkey doesn’t split despite the fact that the east is inhabited by 20 million kurds. Any independence try of the kurds is repressed by the turkish army, many civilians are killed and no The Hague court is protecting, or fighting for them !
Every county in every age has been indispute over land and sad as it is I predict that with population growth and the climate changes, the lack of food being able to be grown, vast population movements will happen causing widespread ethnic cleansing & wars on small scale town against town, village against village. I hope Im ether wrong or dead before it happens
oh, in the case of those countries/peoples it is a matter of religion and/or customs. Our gypsies are mainly of 2 kinds: 1) those who try to behave like the local population. 2) those who keep the old customs–> they marry at 11 (both girls and boys), and at 40 they are grand parents. That implies, also, that girls go to school just for 4 years, or so…or not at all. Boys try to learn to read and write because they need a driver license ! …how are they feeding their too large families, with which money ? You imagine how !

Maybe because we can imagine how is hard to live without freedom. Your country was under communism system for many years too, so you can feel it. In Kosovo there is (I supposed main) problem: religion – it out to be a real bone of contention.
@*do you know Europe is supporting financially Kosovo, as well as Gaza. Peoples of these regions would die of hunger without this money. They have these problems mainly because, for religious reasons, each woman has 5-8 children, on average.btw, choose a nick, it would be easier for everybody * 🙂
